Taupo to Wellington

Friday, Nov 16, 2001

Gladly a late start: 9:30 AM at the Bus, so we could sleep in a little, and from what I heard, those who went on a pubcrawl the night before really needed it. While some people did parasailing on Lake Taupo, the others had 90 minutes to stroll through Taupo.

Then our way led us through Tongariro National Park with its beautiful (cloud covered) mountain peaks (old volcanos) where we did one photostop.
Lunch stop of the day was a place in the middle of nowhere called "Flat Hills". Probably 50 years ago just a farm offering sandwiches and drinks to travelers, now mutated to a cozy restaurant (serving i.e. Lamburger ! Yummy !) with leisure park appeal (a mini jet boat course, petting zoo, souvenir shop ... )

On the next segment of the trip to Wellington, our darling tour manager Julia tried to get us in touch with New Zealand animated comedy and popped in a video called "Footrot Flats, a dog's tale", chronicling the adventures of a stereotypical new Zealand sheep dog, called "Dog" and his owner and all kinds of neighbor and other animals ... bursting into song and dance from time to time.
I guess you have to be born and raised a Kiwi to really be able to completely appreciate the humour in it. But it was still somewhat interesting, when suddenly a surprise nap-attack hit me and I dozed off.

We arrived save and sound in Wellington and had just enough time for a shower (and running to find a cybercafe) before we left for our optional dinner at "Little Gringos". Outside seating in heavy winds ... The dinner concept was (besides a first drink) continuously coming Pizzas (which were pretty boring by the way) accompanied by potato wedges, fries and garlic bread.

After an hour or so, 12 of us hopped on cabs and went to Westpac Stadium to witness Robbie Williams in concert. The weather got even more cold and windy and everyone was freezing. The security controls were somewhat weird: one girl was asked if she has a camera in her bag, and was then asked to remove the film from it ... but no one actually checked if she did (and no one wondered if I had a film-less cam in my pocket :)
The concert was OK, I hardly knew any of the music and Mr. Williams has an ego way to big for my taste :) I left about 10 minutes before the show ended to dodge the crowd, and walked all the way back to town. The place of choice in Wellington seems to be the "Fat Ladies Arms", a bar / dancing place. Way too loud as I found out later, pretty impossible to carry a conversation. So around midnight I went back to the hotel, and a very nice night person brought me a huge back of ice, for my "swollen ankle" (my main excuse to ask for ice at a hotel bar, for making my own Gin & Tonics up in my room) so I could have a nightcap and phased out, while the TV was still running :)
